Mary Billyou is a lens-based artist whose work explores cultural memory by directing attention to the limits of institutional frames. Working both independently and for commission, Billyou produces films and programs screenings. Her commissions include documenting durational performances by the artists Pope.L, Robin Rhode, Martha Rosler, and Anne Wilson. She also periodically writes about independent cinema in New York City.

Billyou’s work has been noted in publications including artforum.com, Artnet, Octopus Journal, and The New York Times, and has screened internationally at venues including:  Antimatter, Ambulante Itinerant Film Festival, CROSSROADS Film Festival, Film Mutations, Images Festival, The New Museum, Spectacle Theater, Sundance, and White Box Gallery. She is the recipient of awards from The New York State Council for the Arts, The Jerome Foundation and The Black Maria Film Festival. Billyou received her MFA in Film, Video, and New Media from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and attended The Whitney Independent Study Program.
